Software Recomendations

<return

If the archive is intended to be published on CD-ROM it is recomended that the project be developed in both Macintosh OS and WindowsXX formats.
For the authoring databases any relational database software will do, such as Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro. Consideration for crossplatform compatability must be taken into account. Data can be automatically uploaded to an online SQL server database via an OBDC data link.

For publishing the Digital Archive on the World Wide Web an eCommerce account must be set up with the web hosting service. Your service provider should be able to offer a SQL database (10MB minimum), Active Servcer Page (ASP) compliance, Streaming Media and, if archive security or access restriction is needed, a Secure Socket Layer.

HUBAR will not recomend nor are we affiliated with any web hosting service. However, as an example of the type of service required the following link is offered for informational purposes only.

The Online Digital Archive is developed using java, javascript and a variety of web authoring tools auch as Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev and Macromedia FLASH. (as was this site)
If the Digital Archive is to be distributed on CD-ROM it may be desirable to create an Macromedia Director projector or Shockwave file. These formats offer important copyright protection advantages.
For developing images for the Digital Arhcive it is hard to beat Adobe Photoshop (for digital photos) or Adobe Illustrator (for vector based design). Any imaging software capable of creating JPEG and Gif files will suffice. It is important to remember that the success of the archive will depend on the beauty of its content.
Adobe Premier is an excellent video editing and formatting tool. Quicktime VR prduces exception effects, as does Macromedia FLASH. Macromedia Sound Edit Pro is a good tool for editing sound files.
FINAL NOTE: The least espensive part of this project is the hardware. There are truely excellent computers available in the market and everything is easier with up to date equipment. The above listed software requires at least a 450 MHz computer (faster if video editing is to be done) such a 450/Pentium3 or a 500MHz
PowerPC G3. You should have at least 256MB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive. Lastly, a broadband Internet connection (Cable or DSL) is strongly recommended.
