Workshop: Mixed Media Collage Book

EXPLORING AND OBSERVING THE MEDIUM:

Drawing with pencil,

Working with Cray-pas (oil pastels),

Creating collages and weaving with paper

Drawing with pencil:

What happens when you use the tip of the pencil as opposed to the side?

How is a drawing pencil different than a writing pencil? How can you make a very dark line?

What happens when you draw a line that comes back to its starting point?

How many shades of gray can you make with your pencil?

How many different kinds of marks can you make wih your pencil and eraser?

What is pattern? How can you make patterns with your pencil?

Demosntrate a range of lines created with pencil and eraser on large white drawing paper and/or oak tag. The pencil has a side and a point; each makes different kinds of marks and textures. Discuss qualities of the line, weight, thickness, direction, gradations, and the possible spatial relationships between various lines. Ask students to make as many different kids of marks as possible with ther pencils. Introduce eraser as a drawing tool; ask students to use the pencil to darken a part of the paper and use the eraser to draw white lines and patterns. Ask students to think about the personal symbols their patterns may evoke.

Creating collage and weaving with paper:

Demonstrate how to use glue and glue brushes. How is collage like drawing with a scissor? Can you draw over your collage with Cray-pas? Do the Cray-pas work better with certain papers than others? Demonstrate simple paper weaving by cutting strips and overlapping them in a criss-cross manner. Can lines be 3 dimensional? (What does 3 dimensional mean?) Show how you can use yarn and string to make aline by drawing the line with glue first, then carefully placing the yarn over the glue line and holding it is place until the glue is partially set (about 20 seconds).
