Workshop: Poetic Images Through Painting and Collage

PROCEEDURE: WORKING WIH THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Class #1, Class #2, Class #3, Class #4
Class #1 :

Create the painted paper.  Experiment and explore, discovering some of the many different things you can do with tempera paint, brushes and other mark making tools on paper.  After children have done their eplorations in tempera paint, save their paintings for use in a collage project.  Make sure that you tell them that their paintings are going to be shared with the class and that for that day your are a painting paper factory.  Eliminate having them put their name on the back of their paintings.  This helps give up ownership

Class #2

Next, read selections from "Beast Feast" and discuss animals, breaking them down into shapes that can be reassembled into an animal.  Point out the border that Florian uses on each page.  Have children select an animal they waould like to create.  Place cut-up painted paper on tables and have children begin to assemble their animal collages. This might take more time than one class.

Class #3

While some children will have to finish their collages, introduce the idea of details and borders.  List or talk about the details of an animal; claws, whiskers, patterns.  Introduce the oil pastels for this.  The pre-K and kindergarten children might need a day of just exploring this medium if they have never used them before.  When talking about borders, brainstorm ideas for one.  Can we use the pattern from the animal as a border?  How about using the colors from the animal?  Can we create a pattern using the colors representing the animal in the border?

Look at the finished work and start playing with rhyming words connected to the animal.  Create a word wall for children to refer to when they do their writing.  Create simple titles or two to four lines of poetry for each piece.
